New district in Freiburg-Dietenbach Concept for charging infrastructure in neighborhood garages

Project period: 09/2025 – 04/2026

The Dietenbach district in Freiburg is a new residential quarter for up to 16,000 residents. In order to implement a sustainable mobility concept for the entire district, stationary traffic will be bundled centrally in up to 16 district garages. hySOLUTIONS is preparing a study for the city of Freiburg on the needs-based expansion and operation of charging infrastructure in the district garages to ensure that future residents have access to charging infrastructure that is just as reliable and as cost-effective as their own wallbox.

Expansion and operation of charging infrastructure in the neighborhood garages in Freiburg Dietenbach:Study in Freiburg-Dietenbach

The Vauban district of Freiburg is known throughout Germany as a pioneer in ecology, energy efficiency, and eco-friendly mobility. The mobility concept for the Dietenbach district, currently under development, is just as ambitious as that of Vauban. With a projected population of up to 16,000 residents, the Dietenbach district will not only be three times larger than Vauban, but it is also farther from the city center, located approximately four kilometers from Freiburg Cathedral. This presents complex challenges for a mobility concept focused on sustainability.

The primary focus is on shifting the modal split in favor of eco-friendly transportation. Many of the planned measures—such as the generous dimensions of sidewalks and bike paths, the creation of bike-sharing services, and the extension of the tram line with three additional stops in the district—contribute to this goal. However, private motorized transportation in Dietenbach is also intended to be low-emission. Since the individual residential units do not have immediate parking spaces, the neighborhood garages serve as central locations for charging electric vehicles. To ensure that access is just as secure and as cost-effective as at a home wallbox, hysolutions is conducting a study for the City of Freiburg on the needs-based expansion and operation of charging infrastructure in the neighborhood garages.

In this study, hysolutions forecasts the market ramp-up of electric mobility in Dietenbach through 2045, determines charging needs, defines the necessary number of charging points, examines different operator roles, and evaluates the integration of on-site power generation, battery storage, and bidirectional charging. The goal is to prepare the neighborhood garages for a future with a fully electrified vehicle fleet right from the time of construction.
