Neighborhood store" pilot project Innovative charging concept for high-density neighborhoods
Project period: 01/2020 – 12/2023
The majority of car owners in metropolitan areas do not have a permanent parking space or their own garage. The shortage of parking spaces is particularly challenging in high-density neighborhoods. Residents who want to switch to electric vehicles are dependent on publicly accessible charging stations or charging facilities at the workplace.
The “Neighborhood Charging Station” pilot project was designed to make it easier for residents and business owners in highly densely populated urban areas to switch to electric mobility. As part of the project, residents and business owners were granted exclusive access to neighborhood charging stations in their immediate living or working environment and could reserve them for charging.
The neighborhood charging stations were installed on public streets but were accessible only to registered users from the neighborhood. Access to the reservation system and the charging stations was provided via a website developed for the project or the E-Charging+ app from Stromnetz Hamburg. Authorized users could choose between booking periods of varying lengths depending on the time of day. To prevent unauthorized use of the charging spaces, they were equipped with sensors and monitored by parking enforcement officers.
The “neighborhood charging” concept was tested in the two pilot neighborhoods of Hoheluft-Ost and Goldbek. The trial was scientifically monitored to gather insights on user acceptance and utilization of the charging infrastructure and to develop recommendations for scalability and transferability.
In addition to providing public charging infrastructure, the pilot project was another important step toward climate-neutral mobility.
hysolutions was commissioned by the Ministry of Economy and Innovation to design the innovative approach and coordinated the pilot project.
